Review

It only takes one glance at the subdued cover to know things likely will not end well for Wilma, our main character, in this series. In the previous issue, we were introduced to her as the new girl – awkward and uncertain of herself. Trying desperately to find her place while also feeling a sense of mistrust with everyone she comes across. We see the story through her eyes – starting with her new school, attempting to make friends and being challenged by a group called The Ravens, who happen to be evil witches.

In this issue, Wilma also begins to realize there’s been trouble in her family history and senses there may be more to come. Although she seems to have some street-smarts, and knows to not believe everything she hears, it’s uncertain whether that’s enough for what’s to come.

The coloring is dreary in the beginning, giving an overall sense of dread and showing us the aloneness she feels. The shifting to a lighter color scheme when she’s at home indicates a sense of safety and helps the reader relate to Wilma’s angst. The panels are very character focused without overwhelming detail in the background.

This issue is not as good as the first one – it continues the story of a magical and uncertain world for Wilma but it’s unclear where it’s headed and could be more developed in this issue.

But the writing and imagery do have my attention. The first issue was enough to keep me intrigued about where the writers will take this five part series. Exploring the mystery of her background? Or showing us a future full of witchcraft?

Final Thoughts

The story has similar undertones to comics you’ve read before. Yes, it could be set in Sunnydale. Yes, It could be Sabrina or Willow. However, if you’re looking for a story with interesting characters that piques your curiosity, give this one a try.
