Recap

As Angel reunites with old friends and old spirits in Sunnydale, he comes face to face with a new demon -- one set on destroying a generation that Angel is entirely unfamiliar with. Will Angel be able to adapt to this new kind of foe...or will he succumb to the demons of his dark and terrible past as Angelus?

Review

An interesting and appropriately broody introduction to a new series of Angel comics. I’ll admit I was against rebooting the Buffy comics but so far Boom has done an outstanding job and this issue is no exception.

Starting with a glimpse into Angel’s past this series jumps right into the grim and gory aspects of this character before jumping ahead to present day. In one issue they’ve done a great job spotlighting what makes this character so interesting and relatable, his caring soul in contrast to the dark and evil of his past. It seems the writer has a great understanding of the character and what makes him so likeable and down to earth.

The art for this issue is also very well done and fitting for the character. Blacks contrasted with bright red give life and urgency to the action scenes while the shadows and drab colors give an intimacy and realness to other scenes; most notable in a scene where Angel is catching up with an old friend at his home.

This issue really changed my mind on the idea of an Angel reboot and I can’t wait to see where the series goes from here.

Final Thoughts

A great adaptation which breathes new life into the character, depicted with stunning art. Evidence that perhaps a reboot wasnt a bad idea after all.
