Aquaman #44: Lost in Memory

An annoyingly typical amnesiac fish out of water story seems to ebb only two issues into Kelly Sue Deconnick’s run on Aquaman. In a critical sink or swim point in this run it seems the response was to tread water. The time may be nigh to decide whether to stay the course or jump ship. (Ok, ocean puns are done)

These first two issues with the new creative team have been a bit toothless to say the least, with minimal answers recieved at this time, and as of the end of this issue Aquaman is now the champion of a bevy of Old Sea gods? What? Nothing about this first arc by Kelly Sue Deconnick has excited me in the slightest. I genuinely hope things improve. Also how long has it been? Arthur is still wearing those same pants? Mera is looking for a new husband? What is happening? I did like the end of the issue with the townsfolk revealing themselves as old gods of the sea, well, sea, storms, rivers and such, aquatic gods I guess? Also are they literal gods? Avatars of gods? It isn’t well explained. Nonetheless, pretty cool reveal, I do hope that the end means we’re getting Arthur back soon there’s enough amnesia stories in the DC Universe.

The art by Robson Rocha with inks by Daniel Henriques and colors by Sunny Cho is excellent for the most part, my only complaint is nothing spectacular really happens in this issue. By which I mean they’re pretty limited artwise by this slow plot so I didn’t find much inherently impressive, at no fault of the art team.
