Review
Archer and Armstrong are back, and Fred Van Lente does it again! Issue one sees the return of the duo as they delve deep into American history, conspiracies, and some good old-fashioned comedy.
If you’re a fan of A&A, you won’t want to miss Assassin Nation. Van Lente crafts a fantastic story, introducing us to a new mission for the duo. Think “National Treasure” meets late-night comedy. Van Lente excels at engaging the reader and perfectly timing the laughs. The action is great, but where the writer truly shines with his comedy and commentary on today’s world. He tackles topical issues and uses controversy in a humorous way, including references to the January 6th riots and even AI art.
Van Lente’s sarcastic dialogue blends seamlessly with a story that honors the history of A&A while also introducing new readers to these amazing characters. This book clearly fits into the Valiant Universe and Alien Books’ new Resurgence! Even if you haven’t been keeping up with the latest Archer and Armstrong titles, Van Lente does a great job of catching you up without bogging down the story with too much recap.
The art in this title is also fantastic! Emiliano Urdinola is a perfect fit, excelling in both action scenes and comical facial expressions. Urdinola’s art enhances the overarching theme and style, giving the story a cinematic feel. The colors add to this, providing an almost grainy, film-like quality reminiscent of old spy films.
All of this creates a perfect storm for a Resurgence of Archer and Armstrong!
Final Thoughts
I hope everyone goes out and picks up this issue! I can't wait to see how this story unfolds. I've missed reading Archer and Armstrong, and I hope this leads to more adventures for the funny duo. Valiant's resurgence under Alien Books continues to go strong!
