Atlantis Attacks #3: The One With the Bad Story

This issue of Atlantis Attacks is pretty forgettable. In fact, sometimes I think this whole mini-series is.  It’s had a couple of great moments, but it’s becoming clear that it’s not for the casual Marvel fan. You pretty much have to have a really deep knowledge of the Marvel Universe to be into this one. This issue is the equivalent to a contract signing between two Wrestlemania opponents. You know there’s gonna be a fight but you have to sit through a lot to get there. Author Greg Pak might’ve gotten a better flow this issue if this mini-series was a book shorter. He does right by just about all the characters, it’s the overall focus of this issue that’s lacking. It doesn’t seem to have a real point to it. In what should be a beat in the overall tale isn’t really a beat at all. One complaint I had was the lack of Namor in this issue. He shows up at two different points, and put together his involvement is about three pages long. Seriously, fans have been begging, screaming, and throwing money at Marvel to get a Namor series, and they must be out to lunch because this is not what “we demanded!!”. Besides the story, the issue doesn’t have any problems. It’s technically sound, and what I was impressed by was that Pak managed to give almost all the characters some screen time and that they all had unique voices and personalities. In that way, Pak proves that he earned his status in the comic industry. Unfortunately, his reputation isn’t enough to save this issue.

Artists Ario Anindito & Robert Gill are both really talented artists. Unfortunately, when you don’t have anything exciting to draw, your talent kind of falls by the wayside. BUT I should be reviewing this on the quality of the art, which is very good. But, there are just way too many characters standing around talking about things.
