Recap

?WARNING: This review contains major spoilers!!?

The most powerful forces on Earth (and some beyond) sense how dire the repercussions will be if the Avengers lose in their battle with the Celestials of the Final Host. The now-titanic forms of She-Hulk, Thor, Ghost Rider and Iron Man duke it out with the still superior Celestials as Black Panther and Captains America and Marvel confront the horde of cosmic locusts. As the fight wears on, the Avengers realize they are going to lose on might vs. might alone and have to think of another way to win. Together they realize that the infected Celestials didn’t just land on Earth to die, they saw the potential for a cure of their malady in Earth’s primordial genetic code. Strange elucidates the theory but Stark puts it into action. Focusing the sum of all of their superhuman powers into a single blast through their chosen avatar (Ghost Rider and his Celestial chassis), the Avengers wipe out the locust swarms and weaken the Celestials, allowing them to be cleansed from the inside-out.  During the aftermath, a chained-up Loki laughs in defeat, seemingly taking credit for reassembling the Avengers.

Review

Once again, the quality created by this group of artists is wonderful, though they had a ton to pack into one final book for this arc. Avengers #6 is an action-packed finale for an action-packed series, and it didn’t disappoint! Robbie has proven he has much more to offer than snarky comic relief, and the other star characters are back to what we know and love (though She-Hulk has taken an unfortunate step backward in her own character development arc). Loki’s involvement is, yet again, complicated and multifaceted. The only downside to this issue is that it seemed a bit rushed compared to its predecessors (in both art direction and dialogue), but it’s exceedingly difficult to bring any arc to an end, let alone one such as this. It’s also difficult to say what direction the Avengers will go next, and at this point, it seems they could go anywhere!

Final Thoughts

Marvel’s cosmic scope has been successfully showcased in their flagship title (mission accomplished!). This arc has truly been a preview of not only re-establishing the Avengers as a team but also to show how big Marvel is willing to go with this title.
