Avengers: No Road Home #6: A Red Witch in the Hyperborean Sunset

Tonally, this issue lands as very different from the previous five and with good reason– this issue marks the introduction of Conan to the greater Marvel Universe. The writing could have opted to bend Conan to the MU but instead opted to leave him firmly planted in the roots of the character and its rich history by adapting their own writing styles to a classic Conan narrative structure. In short, there is no doubt from the opening pages that you are reading a Conan story, and a well-constructed one at that. The language… fits. Perfectly.

A perfect compliment to the care taken with language in this issue is the art of Sean Izaakse. From bazaars and marketplaces to vast deserts filled with brigands and monsters, Izaakse manages to capture the essence of Conan while staying true to his own stylistic renderings. Note the heavy black framing on most panels, a staple of these types of narrative– a very nice touch of detail easily forgotten but oh so crucial to maintaining the transitory effect of blending two canons.
