Barstow #1
Recap
Special Agent Diaz just arrived in Barstow and is already regretting it!
Review
Monsters, guts, and detectives oh my! I walked into Barstow completely blind and came out eagerly awaiting more. Barstow was hatched by the creative team of w/a/ who have created a behemoth of a story mixed with everything you love about gore-infused b-movies!
The book starts silently, letting the wonderful art of Tyler Jenkins take the wheel to start off what promises to be a sadistic good time. Jenkins’ grimy hues bring Barstow to life and capture the beauty of the Mojave Desert. David Ian and Rebekah McKendry have created a world made of equal parts Cronenberg and Kyuss. The cover alone should be enough to convince you!
The best gore has sustenance and Barstow has it! From the first panel to the last this creative team takes you on a blood-soaked thrill ride piloted by Special Agent Miranda Diaz. Miranda’s not to sure why she’s in Barstow or who the special is, all she knows is that the sh*t has hit the fan and it’s up to her to figure it out. Did I mention there were demons?! Yes, demons! As a self-professed gorehound, this book hits the right amount of wickets and it’s books like these that are a stark reminder that not all good stories have superheroes and capes in them.
Final Thoughts
Barstow #1 takes its time getting off the ground but in doing so, it does a great job in grabbing the reader and smacking them with freshly ripped entrails. Bottom line, read Barstow #1; I can’t wait to see where this story goes.
Barstow #1: Welcome to Bartstow. Come for the hospitality, stay for the demons!
