Review
I’ve been rooting for Basketful of Heads from the beginning, and issue three does not disappoint as far as content. With expertly crafted dialogue, dynamic art, and suspense that can be slashed with an axe, Basketful of Heads #3 is an excellent continuation of the series.
Beginning with tense back-and-forth between June and Sal, the dialogue of Basketful of Heads #3 has a good dose of realism to it, with June’s panic being palpable, and Sal’s combination of disgusting-ness and cowardice playing directly into what is expected of someone in his unenviable position. The story really delved into the true horror of Sal’s situation both in this issue and the issue prior; it brings up, for example, the issue of Sal’s inability to drown without lungs now.
It handles the twist of the false rescue well. Though it is somewhat predictable, it is not overwhelmingly so, and it is not the only foregone conclusion of the situation. The hope that is smashed under the realization that June is in danger is palpable. While she will undoubtedly use the magical axe to escape in the next issue, adding to her gruesome collection, the pain she is being put through gives the reader a very real sense of pain and worry for her.
The added element of Liam’s possible betrayal is also a nice touch. While we as the readers hope it is a lie, the truth of the matter is undoubtedly more interesting, especially as June’s mission brings her closer and closer to the sheriff. Does the sheriff himself know of Liam’s deception? Is he involved? We shall hopefully find out within the next few issues as June attempts to escape the horrors of Brody Island.
Final Thoughts
A stressful, head-scratching (heh) issue, Basketful of Heads #3 (Hill, Leomacs, Stewart, Bennett) continues to deliver twists, turns, and terrors that make readers excited for more.
