Recap

There have been several murders lately. They are strange cases. The victims seem to have died of heart attacks and then were stabbed afterward. After investigating, Batgirl realizes the murders remind of a horror movie she saw with her brother and father when she was younger. She goes to visit her brother, James Jr. He is in prison because he is a murderer.

Their last encounter did not go too well for James. He had threatened to kill their mother, so Batgirl hit him with a boomerang and he fell off of a bridge. He was thought dead for a while but ended up being alive. He was eventually arrested. She finds out from James that the murderer is probably a fan of his. He gives her a box of letters he had received. James asks her to visit regularly since he helped her. Batgirl goes through the box and finds several likely suspects. She investigates them one by one.

Eventually, Batgirl finds the right culprit. She takes the crazed woman down easily enough, but not before the woman talks about how James had helped her get started. Batgirl realizes that James set this whole thing up and confronts him about it. She doesn’t know what his plan is, but she knows that he is up to something. After she leaves, James thinks to himself how he misses his sister and that he remembers watching the horror movies as well. He remembers that Barbara enjoyed them too. He thinks that he can bring Batgirl’s dark side out so they can truly be a family again.

Review

Scott does a great job with delving into the two siblings and their relationship. She goes as far back as Gail Simone’s run, with some of the flashbacks. You can tell Scott has done her homework. The art in the annual fits the tone it was going for, with a blend of darkness and innocence. I loved that the flashbacks were all shaded red. This was a good story that can lead to future developments. I would very much like to see more of Barbara’s twisted brother.

Final Thoughts

Mairghread Scott knows her stuff and weaves an interesting tale of sibling rivalry gone wrong.
