Review
If there was to be one big selling point for Josh Williamson’s Batman and Robin, it would be that it is giving readers exactly what the title suggests. The series has done an incredible job maintaining a straightforward narrative, steering clear of the clutter of concurrent Bat-titles. Joshua Williamson skillfully gives readers a fun series centered around the Batman and Robin, emphasizing their father/son bond. The series has also done a great job of bringing new life into Damian Wayne’s character, offering much-needed development and reintroducing elements from Williamson’s Robin series. This issue does a great job intertwining and solving the various plotlines, such as the last issue’s revelation of Mistress Harsh’s true identity as Principal Stone, and the plot around Man-Bat and Shush.
Much like the last issue, Nikola Cižmešija’s art and Rex Lokus’ colors are much more approachable and reader-friendly. Simone Di Meo’s art with Giovanna Niro’s colors works great together, especially in this issue, but the series would benefit from either featuring only Di Meo and Niro or Cižmešija and Lokus. The differences in styles between the two teams give a whiplash effect and can be distracting. With the reveal that Batman and Robin will be going after Bane on Dinosaur Island, it appears that a new artist will be taking over which is exciting. Williamson has been delivering some great work on this series, and while the art has been great, the series would benefit greatly from having a consistent creative team for at least the next arc.
Final Thoughts
Batman and Robin #10 does an excellent job wrapping the current story up while not feeling rushed. Williamson has done a great job giving readers fun Batman and Robin stories while still revisiting elements from the Robin series. While all of the art in this issue is fantastic, the contrast between the two artists’ styles is quite distracting and at times feels like two different books. However, this issue leaves the series in a good place and readers should be excited for what Williamson is planning for the next arc.
