Batman and Robin #3: Full Speed Ahead

Batman and Robin #3 gives readers exactly what the title says: Batman and Robin. Only the first two pages of this issue feature Bruce and Damian with their masks off, and even then it is a flashback. The rest of the issue is nonstop Batman and Robin action and it is such a blast to see. By issue #3, readers should have a pretty good idea of what Williamson is doing with this series. With Gotham War ending last month, this is the first issue of the series that hasn’t mentioned or referenced something that is happening in concurrent books. While Williamson did an excellent job establishing continuity and context to this series, putting space between the recent event and Batman and Robin gives it a lot of room to have its own identity. DC will probably always rely on putting out so many Bat-titles, right now readers have some solid options. 

Between what Chip Zdarsky and Ram V. are doing in Batman and Detective Comics respectively, readers are getting books in three solid directions. Batman and Robin gives Williamson a chance to focus on Bruce and Damian’s relationship and it certainly gives Simone Di Meo a chance to give readers some impressive art. Di Meo’s art suits the story Williamson is trying to tell, especially with what he is doing with Damian. Di Meo’s highly stylized art is unlike anything else coming out of a Bat-title, but it might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but the readers who love it will find that it is such a great fit for a Damian-focused series. Steve Wands’ lettering in Batman and Robin #3 masterfully complements the dynamic energy emanating from Simone Di Meo’s art. Wands seems to be having a lot of fun weaving in onomatopoeia into the fast-paced action, matching the energy of Di Meo’s art.
