Review
Batman: Gotham by Gaslight – The Kryptonian Age #6 finds the story at the midway point as things start to catch fire.
Diggle sets the stage for the next installment of this 12-issue series in another series of vignettes that begins with John Constantine, who has been abducted by the League of Assassins and brought to meet Ras Al Ghul himself. In this sequence, John, in an attempt to save his life and gain the aid of the League Of Assassins, under the guise of searching for him at the bequest of Queen Victoria, tells Ras about a man, whose story has been told through the annuls of time. Diggle captures both the nuances and personality of both Constatine and Ra’s, tweaking them to characters that work well in this Elseworlds story. Fernández provides some stunning art in this section, mainly Constantine’s facial reactions.
The scene then shifts to the South Pacific as Wonder Woman and Adam Strange continue their journey as claims of a monster on board are abound. Wonder Woman confronts the monster that turns out to be Martian Manhunter, the Scourge of Krypton, who was last seen awaking on Mars at the end of issue #3. Martian Manhunter realizes that he and Wonder Woman share a common enemy in the Kryptonians, who were responsible for laying his world to waste,
The final part of the issue returns to Smallville where things are heating up following Sheriff Clark Kent’s run-in with Deadshot and Slipknot of the Suicide Squad, who are in town as a traveling Wild West Traveling Show, which includes Harley Quinn, Killer Croc, Copperhead, and El Diablo. Diggle continues to handle the large number of characters, giving each member of the Squad their own moments as their plan is revealed. Diggle also uses Clark’s vulnerability to magic in fun way that allows him to reveal his true self in the issue’s cliffhanger.
Also in this section, Batman confronts Alan Scott about taking the ring which doesn’t go well for Bats and Alan Scott gets a new look and sets larger events in motion.
