Review

Batman/Santa Claus: Silent Knight #2 is split into two parts, the first being an expository segment that discusses the origins of Krampus and his relationship to Santa Claus within the DC universe. The second segment introduces more members of the DC universe to this narrative, such as Miss Martian, Green Arrow, Black Canary, and Superman. Overall, this issue builds on a lot of the foundation of the first, while also growing what promises to be a foundation to the Santa Claus mythos firmly within DC continuity.

The plotting and scripting from Jeff Parker do an excellent job in growing the mythos established within the first issue. Additionally, there is a lot of care given to the establishment of the mythos when compared to the actual mythology around Krampus and Santa Claus. Parker does a great job in incorporating Krampus’s back story with certain known aspects of the DC universe, creating a new found pathos behind the Santa Clause character. This also allows Krampus to gain some relatability despite his appearance and more common background.

Michele Bandini and Alex Sinclair shine when it comes to the incorporation of the greater DC universe. Characters like Green Arrow and Black Canary are full of that jovial Christmas spirit and radiate that fun tone that makes this story so joyful. The best surprise is when Superman arrives at the end of the issue, exclaiming, “You never said that you knew Santa.” The way Bandini draws his expression really captures the wholesome heart of the character that has made fans adore him for years. The next issue will hopefully build on that and give fans that Superman/Santa Claus relationship that will make any Christmas fan giddy and excited.

Overall, Batman/Santa Claus: Silent Knight #2 doesn’t break any new ground when it comes to comic books; however, the way that it captures and builds upon the holiday spirit while incorporating mythological elements surrounding Santa Claus and Krampus absolutely beats any DC or Marvel, in-continuity Christmas stories thus far. If this book continues at this pace, it will be essential reading every holiday season for years and years to come.

Final Thoughts

Batman/Santa Claus: Silent Knight #2 does an excellent job in establishing a new backstory for Santa Claus and Krampus while introducing more and more elements from the world of DC.
