Review

What is better than Batman and Superman teaming up? The answer is the Batman and Superman of Kingdom Come teaming up with the Batman and Superman of Batman/Superman: World’s Finest. The current arc of the series has found the World’s Finest trapped in the universe of Kingdome Come as they attempt to save David, and issue #23 finally gives readers the team-up they’ve been waiting for. While this issue is an absolute blast for readers, Mark Waid might be having the most fun. His love and respect for these characters are boundless and come through on every page. Revisiting a great work like Kingdom Come can be risky since it is seen as an iconic and classic story, but Waid has done such a fantastic job of planting the seeds in World’s Finest to get to where we are.

Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #23 is nonstop action with some of the creative team’s best work on the series yet. There hasn’t been a bad issue of this series yet but issue #23 raises the bar. Dan Mora’s art has never looked better and is brought to new heights by Tamra Bonvillain’s coloring. The art feels grand and cinematic and every page is worth framing and hanging on a wall. Mora does such an incredible job juggling the action and the many characters, including multiple Batman and Supermans. Bonvillain’s vibrant color palette adds an energetic look that just pops and adds some interesting dimension to Mora’s pencils. Together, Mora and Bonvillain are creating the best-looking book on shelves. The lettering is also stellar in this issue. Steve Wands does a great job with speech balloon placement that doesn’t get in the way of the great movement Mora’s art and panel arrangement creates. Gog’s size in this issue is colossal and his lettering sells that idea with bolder and larger lettering than the rest of the issue and gives readers the visual cue that he is an imposing force and threat.

Final Thoughts

Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #23 is a visual feast for readers and easily one of the best books on shelves today. Waid has treated the series like a love letter to Batman and Superman and shows that a love for the characters and their history informs great stories. The same can be said about the art. Mora and Bonvillain are an absolute dream team and putting out work that feels like what all superhero comics should strive for.
