Review
Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #28 is packed with explosive fun cover to cover and the perfect way to start the summer. The new issue marks the third part of the current arc, which pits evil imps against the World’s Finest and friends. Mark Waid brings many ideas into this issue with the creative team, artists Dan Mora and Travis Mercer, colorist Tamra Bonvillain, and letterer Steve Wands. Waid covers a lot of ground with this issue, so things feel a little chaotic sometimes, but it’s filled with fun ideas and action. Waid excels at playing with what the imps are capable of, and readers will see Bat-Mite take Batman and Superman through different dimensions. Travis Mercer handles the Bat-Mite segments and effectively translates Waid’s vision and the concepts of the multiple dimensions.
While the journey Batman and Superman go through with Bat-Mite is fantastic, Robin and Jimmy Olsen have their adventure with Mister Mxyzptlk as they take on the main threat. Waid takes the perfect opportunity to pump up the Silver Age vibes and has Mister Mxyzptlk bestow his powers onto Jimmy. Dan Mora continues to prove that he can make anything cool because seeing an imp version of Jimmy is some of the coolest stuff to come out of this arc. On top of that, Bonvillain’s colors are some of the best of the series and perfectly balances Mora and Mercer’s pencils while leaning into the fantastical elements associated with the imps. Despite how much is happening in this issue, the pacing feels perfect thanks to the creative team.
Final Thoughts
Overall, Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #28 is a rollercoaster of an issue but thanks to Waid’s writing and the talent of the rest of the team, this issue hits all of the beats of a fantastic issue. Both Mora and Mercer wrangle the larger-than-life ideas into something understandable and followable with the help of Bonvillain’s stunning colors. Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #28 has something for everyone and is a perfect example of why this is one of the best series currently on shelves.
