Review
Batman/Superman: World’s Finest has been a fan favorite and has done a fairly good job of retelling the first meetings of various heroes, most importantly the first meeting between Batman and Superman. With the inclusion of elements introduced in World’s Finest influencing main continuity in the past, it appears that Mark Waid has been giving readers the current origins of these characters. It was only a matter of time before readers saw the first official adventure for The Trinity. Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #30 is a self-contained story that finds Superman, Batman, and Robin traveling to Themyscira at the request of Wonder Woman. When they arrive they learn that there was a murder and Wonder Woman needs the World’s Finest to help her solve it.
The mystery aspect of this issue does a few interesting things to the story. For one, Batman can demonstrate how he is the world’s greatest detective. It also splits the party so readers see Batman and Wonder Woman working together and seeing Robin and Superman interact, which is always wonderful. Waid ensures that there are twists and turns and even some horror elements in this investigation, but he does a fine job wrapping it all up in one issue. Gleb Melnikov takes over art duties from Dan Mora, and while Mora will be missed, Melnikov’s style seems to be a great fit. It helps that Tamra Bonvillain lays down the color to bridge the gap in tone and style, though nothing can replicate the magic of Mora and Bonvillain’s collaborations. This issue is packed with great visuals that will leave readers smiling. Melnikov does a wonderful job capturing smaller details that Waid’s writing can’t convey alone, like a wholesome moment between Wonder Woman and Superman when he invites her to get coffee with him and Batman.
Final Thoughts
Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #30 takes on the interesting challenge of depicting the first adventure of the Trinity. With so many actual years of history with these characters, it is a nearly impossible task to please everyone, but Waid and company do an excellent job. This issue packs in the elements that readers expect out of the Trinity without overreaching. In the end, this is a fun one-off adventure that doesn’t rewrite history or change continuity. Fans of this series will have a blast with this issue and wish it was stretched out to two or more issues just so they can spend some more time with the Trinity.
