Review
Batman/Superman: World’s Finest has continuously proven that with the right creative team, any book can be an absolute blast. Mark Waid is having an incredible year at DC. Between World’s Finest, Absolute Power, and this week’s Batman & Robin: Year One #1, Waid has been a driving force behind some of the best books and events in recent memory. With the relaunch of World’s Finest in 2022, Waid along with artist Dan Mora gave readers some of the most fun adventures of Batman, Superman, and the revolving cast of supporting characters. Even with Mora’s departure as the main artist, the series hasn’t lost momentum. Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #32 is an all-around blast of an issue with some of the best art to date. Readers who may be weary of the strength of the art since Mora’s departure should have no worries after reading this issue. Adrián Gutiérrez’s style is similar enough to Mora’s that there isn’t a jump in visual continuity, but it also has its unique feeling that feels fresh and new.
Since the start, Waid has leaned hard into golden and silver age fun, and the rest of the creative team understands the assignment. This issue will be the most fun readers have with an Eclipso story. Gutiérrez’s choices are a lot of fun and fully take advantage of the series’ tone. Tamra Bonvillain’s colors especially stick out in this issue. She has continually bridged the gap between different artists on this series but here she is fully in sync with Gutiérrez. Between the clever panel layouts and the use of Ben-Day dots, this is easily one of the best-looking issues of the series. Steve Wands’ lettering also feels especially fun in this issue and seems to pick up on the choices Gutiérrez is going for and compliment them perfectly.
Final Thoughts
Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #32 shows that the series hasn’t lost its steam and Waid still has a bunch of great ideas. Between the Justice League and Justice Society taking on Eclipso to the Spectre making a surprise and terrifying appearance, this issue has something for everyone. Waid does such an incredible job juggling so many characters so readers are getting the moments they expect but also some fantastic surprises. With such solid writing, it leaves a lot of room for the artists and letterer to deliver some fantastic fun.
