Review
This year has been excellent for DC fans. Whether it is the critically and commercially acclaimed Absolute line or the DC All In initiative, there has been something for everyone. Fans of Mark Waid have been especially lucky with books like Justice League Unlimited and Batman/Superman: World’s Finest, so the last four issues of this series have been a dream come true. Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #39 continues the “We Are Yesterday” crossover with Justice League Unlimited. The six-part series has done an incredible job of distilling what makes the two series great without shutting out each other. Mark Waid’s writing is razor sharp and fun as ever, opening the door for Clayton Henry to provide some of his best work on this series.
There is plenty of time travel hijinks to go around in Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #39, but not in the way the cover art suggests. Yes, the characters on the cover make a brief appearance, but there is also a heartwarming reunion that fans have been waiting for. That is not to say that various characters on the cover will not be playing a part in the future. For the most part, this issue follows the World’s Finest Batman, Superman, and Dick Grayson as they swap places with their present-day selves. While the present-day heroes try to figure out a way to fix things, the World’s Finest crew takes on Scarecrow and Sinestro. Clayton Henry does a wonderful job adding subtle differences between the time-displaced groups, and the action feels especially exciting and fun. One aspect that makes the art feel so exciting is Tamra Bonvillain’s colors. Bonvillain adds a certain feel to the books that she works on that brings the best out of artists. With an issue that has explosive action and heartwarming moments, the colors do a wonderful job of enhancing those feelings.
Final Thoughts
Despite being a crossover, Batman/Superman: World's Finest #38 still retains the parts of itself that make it great. Mark Waid and company packed this issue with explosive fun, heartwarming moments, and opens the door to endless possibilities. With two issues to go, “We Are Yesterday” has been an engaging and memorable crossover.
