Review
Batman / Superman: World’s Finest #49, written by Mark Waid and Mark Russell, drawn by Marcus To, colored by Tamra Bonvillain, and lettered by Steve Wands, is part 2 of the current Day for Night arc, which pits the World’s Finest against two of their multiverse counterparts. Like always, the issue takes big ideas and balances Silver Age fun with contemporary stylings. With Mark Waid and Mark Russell both writing, the story is packed with fun concepts that never lose the readers’ attention. Russell’s contribution in particular stands out and feels like such a good fit for the series. If Waid were to leave the series, Russell would make an incredible successor. He not only understands the book’s tone but thrives in it. There’s a clear appreciation and understanding of the balance that Waid has managed for nearly 50 issues. Both writers have a rare talent for making even the silliest of ideas feel smart and engaging.

When it comes to the art in this issue, Marcus To is an excellent choice and maintains the visual feel of the series. His style feels classic while still feeling fresh and modern, much like the writing. Like the original artist, Dan Mora, To can put the characters on the page just as readers imagine them. The soul of the series continues to be present through Tamra Bonvillain’s colors. Bonvillain, as always, elevates the art, adding depth and atmosphere to To’s pencils. Steve Wands’ lettering is another hallmark of the series, and always ensures that dialogue and text are delivered as efficiently as possible.
Final Thoughts
Batman / Superman: World’s Finest #49 is just another example of what makes this series such a standout. Even with shifting contributors, the creative team always embraces the fun, understands the characters, and delivers a fantastic experience.
