Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #5: Dream Team

Batman/Superman: World’s Finest is exactly what I want out of a comic book right now. The art is incredible and the writing is engaging. Every issue has been consistently enjoyable, and issue #5 was no different. In fact, Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #5 might be my favorite issue of the series so far. The conclusion to this arc was truly exciting and left me completely on board for whatever comes next. Mark Waid doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel with his writing on this series, but he does know the current wheel better than most. Considering Batman and Superman are two of DC’s biggest heroes, other writers may take that as a challenge to write the biggest story. 

Nezha seemed more and more of an unstoppable force through the five issues. A weakness was revealed in this issue, but it appeared to be temporary. When it comes to Batman and Superman, you know they are going to save the day. The magic of this series is wondering how it will be saved. I loved the way Waid wrote Batman and Superman in this issue. In the end, Nezha was defeated in the most Batman and Superman ways possible and it was executed near perfectly. While Waid knows how to write all of these characters, Dan Mora and Tamra Bonvillain know how to show them. The art in this issue is incredible. Mora was born to draw these characters. Every character you know and love in this series looks incredible and Bonvillain masterfully brings in color to create what I think is one of the best-looking books of the year. Aditya Bidikar is one of my favorite letterers in comics today. They are extremely thoughtful in conveying Waid’s writing to get the most of the script. I am sure there are moments in this issue that become more powerful, emotional, or exciting than intended to be because of the lettering.
