Review

This issue of Batman: The Adventures Continue is a direct continuation of the last issue, which is normal for most comics, but not for the Batman: Animated Universe. Most comic/episodes of this Batman are one and done, which is fine with me, it’s really nice to get a story that you can pick up and read start to finish in one sitting and you don’t have to worry about continuity or what happened in the previous chapters. This comic is different, though. You’ve got long-form narrative storytelling and it seems a little “off” in this world. It’s not distracting enough to ruin the book or anything, it just feels a little out of place here. Add to that, authors Paul Dini and Alan Burnett throw in a handful of guest-stars, which aren’t usually the norm in this world.

Normally, they use them very sparingly but in this issue, they pack quite a few in. It does fit the story, but it doesn’t seem to add anything to it. They seem to be there as a way to clean up the aftermath of the battle so that Batman doesn’t have to. It’s a bit of a disappointing issue overall. Not a bad story, I was just expecting something that stuck a little more to the traditional format of the original series.

The art by Ty Templeton is again, on point. He does a great job of capturing the look of the series and this issue, in particular, his visual storytelling is fantastic. You could totally get what’s going on strictly by looking at the art, no problem. This is a digital-first book, but I really can’t wait to see this comic on a printed page, I’m betting it’s going to look even more amazing than it does.

Final Thoughts

A good, but not great, issue. Hopefully, this series will stick to the Batman Universe and less and less on the extended DC Universe.
