Recap

Ra's Al Ghul is at odds with a criminal conglomerate in Gotham called "The Money."  He used a doppelganger of Bruce Wayne to take over Waynetech and banished Batman to a fantasy dimension in the custody of a sorceress.

But Deadman showed up! It's a good thing, too, because that sorceress turned out to be his long lost sister! And the Bruce Wayne doppelganger turned out to be Deadman's long lost brother!  Now they are all teamed up to foil Ra's' plan!

Review

This issue is an amazing conclusion to a series that was so random as to be surreal.  This was not a linear story with a predictable chain of events, and nothing in this issue is predictable.  It doesn’t matter. We’re along for the ride. Neal Adams creates an amazing, larger than life vision and pushes us along through weird room after weird room like Willy Wonka.  If you’re stopping to complain that things are random and not making sense, then you’re like one of those kids who eats candy while Wonka’s not looking and ends up blowing up like a balloon or drowning in a river of chocolate. Don’t be Veruca Salt, be Charlie Bucket! Just go with it. Otherwise, you’ll miss out on lots of random outbursts and a ten page scene on the set of Gotham’s favorite and most watched news station where Neal uses Ra’s, Commissioner Gordon, and a scientist to explain how we can use water as an energy source and that’s what they should use to power Gotham.

Yes, just go with it.  And then enjoy Batman running around with an army of green faced guys in riot gear that turn out to be Etrigan’s minions, and enjoy Batman with a moustache, and enjoy when people turn out to be robots, enjoy not knowing which of this story’s characters actually ever knew who they themselves even were, and if so when, and enjoy Deadman getting a girlfriend, and enjoy the somewhat Scooby-Dooesque ending of this latest installment of Neal’s Batman Odyssey, called “Batman Vs. Ra’s Al Ghul”.

Final Thoughts

Whatever you were expecting, even if you were expecting bewildering randomness, this will still exceed and confound your every prediction.
