Review
A boat becomes a grave. A storm becomes a weapon. A slave becomes a goddess.
Bear Pirate Viking Queen #2 has arrived and the Viking is pissed! In the second installment of Sean Lewis and Jonathan Marks Barravecchia’s epic retelling of how the world came to be, we are introduced to the Viking (and yes we are referring to him as the Viking due to spoilers.) and his plan to take back what was his land many many years ago. His revenge is fueled by pure rage, something he’s not short of. His itinerary of pain has him stopping by to see the Queen of England, but not before he has a discussion that would make Howard Zinn smile.
Sean Lewis continues to spin yarn like a madman possessed. From the opening salvo, we are graciously fed a story of how the Viking, a once proud warrior has had a fall from grace and now searches for those responsible. Lewis’s retelling of the Viking’s story comes full circle when the question accosts the reader: Are the Viking and Queen that much different from one another? Not to be left below decks (nautical joke), Jonathan Marks Barravecchia’s visuals are a breathtaking explosion of the story’s soul with clever reimagination of these infamous characters. Two of my favorite parts of the book are Barravecchia’s take on the Queen and the panel when the Viking and the Bear are slowly approaching the town from the water; compelling visuals compliment a powerful story.
Final Thoughts
Here we are with issue two and as expected I’m completely blown away by this outstanding mythological retooling. It’s books like these that make it unfair for the rest of the titles on the shelf. Sean Lewis and Jonathan Marks Barravecchia have possibly created the mini-series of the year.
