Becstar, Issue 3
Recap
Becstar and her crew continue to search Anyssa and the Creation Gauntlet while Mordecai tries to beat them to her. There may be more for Bec to worry about as a new or old face shows up.
Review
The mysteries pile up in this story. We now wonder if our newest member of Bec’s crew is really the person we thought her to be. A new Paprika who claims to be from Anyssa shows up in the end to confuse an already confusing situation.
I do like the the flashback scenes and I like the use of the muted colors to distinquish these segments from the “live” events. Here the flashbacks create more questions than they answer. The three other members of Bec’s old crew, including Anyssa, who we believe from the previous issues to have a special relationship with the titular character, were secretly working with Mordecai to keep Bec out of the haul. Mordecai has a definite reason to keep Bec out of the loop and the others after a little argument from Anyssa seem to go along with him.
The art here is very fun for this type of story. It is cartoony and very exaggerated, and I usually do not care for that style, but here it wins me. It is undoubtedly fun and helps depict the annoyance of the characters in a very comical way. I like the details in the backgrounds and the extra characters. Overall, Lorenzo Colangeli looks like he is having fun in his designs of the different aliens, and he makes it look like Bec may be enjoying the adventure a little too much, especially in the car chase scene.
I particularly like the use of colors to depict the speed of Bec’s ship. The purples and yellows along with the distortions in the shape of the ship effectively show that the ship is traveling at a high rate speed. The ship could be going so fast that it may have difficulties in navigation obstacles as depicted in the impact imminent caption. The colors themselves show that, creating this groovy vibe to it.
Final Thoughts
The mysteries continue to pile up as we travel with Becstar and her crew. Why does Mordecai dislike Bec so much and can Anyssa be trusted? This issue leaves me hanging, in the best of ways.
