Review
Birds of Prey #2 is a solid follow up to the stellar first issue. It keeps the charms, excitement, and amazing art while also giving the story a focus rather than overly done action set pieces. It’s a more Harley-centric issue, but Kelly Thompson is certainly writing all characters with their own voice and purpose, making for a great read.
The issue begins with a flashback to two sisters enjoying a campfire in the woods. It’s a small moment, but it is giving much needed emotional backstory to why the rescue mission is so important. While it is only a couple of pages, I suspect readers will be given more details on why that moment is so critical.
While issue #1 revolved around the forming of the team, issue #2 provides some internal conflict and kicks off the mission to save Dinah’s sister from Themyscira. Despite being a wild card, Harley Quinn is given a moment to add her value to the team with an unorthodox approach and with a familiar contact.
As a follow up, this issue’s pacing was not as quick as the premiere issue, however, it isn’t a bad thing in this instance. Part of the charm of this series is how Thompson is incorporating different DC characters into the story and combined with Leonardo Romero’s art, Jordie Bellaire’s coloring, and Clayton Cowles’ lettering, comes an entertaining and visually appealing issue.
I particularly love the entire style of characters and colors throughout this series and I hope the creative team sticks together throughout the full run. The art can only be described as “pulp pop art,” and it is a style that I have quickly become impressed by. For a team up/heist-esque style story, the art is such a perfect fit. Additionally, there are some creative uses of panels in this issue that are sure to impress all comic book readers.
It’s hard not to gush at this series as I already see myself making an effort every month to pick it up from my LCS. It’s sharp, action packed, and visually such a great series.
Final Thoughts
If you aren’t already reading this series and you’re reading this review, what are you waiting for? Issue 1 is out. If you have jumped on the bandwagon and know how special this is, you’re going to be happy to know issue 2 continues the high quality production that is, Birds of Prey.
