Review

Birds of Prey #3 knocks it out of the park with a stellar entry that is sure to have readers laughing and cheering. This series has been an awesome blend of action, sharp dialogue, and a plot that keeps readers hooked.

Written by Kelly Thompson, this issue kicks off with King Shark—the one and only—showing up with a Mega Shark as a way for the team to sneak into Themyscira to save Black Canary’s sister, Sin. It’s an outlandish idea to go inside of the mouth of a shark, but what do you expect from someone like Harley Quinn?

Leaning into the core traits of DC characters has been a strong suit of this series and Thompson nails the voice of everyone she includes in this story. This is evident from the dialogue between characters. Sure, there are some snarky moments, but Thompson doesn’t stray from who characters are and instead weaves their voice well in a story that is all about reluctant characters having to work together.

Elevating the story is the art from Leonardo Romero and colors from Jordie Bellaire. I can’t think of a better artistic team to handle this story and their strengths blend well to make panels that are funny and downright awesome. They also design the main cover and it’s a creative and excellent design.

In addition to the art, Clayton Cowles on the letters does a great job with the text throughout the series. Dialogue is critical to this series with the banter between characters and Cowles incorporates conversations and sound effects well.

Final Thoughts

Readers who have been following the series are certainly going to enjoy issue 3 and for those who haven’t checked out the series yet—what are you waiting for?!
