Recap

THE BIRDS VS. THE AMAZON WARRIORS! Chaos reigns as the first mission for the Birds of Prey has (unsurprisingly) gone sideways. Even with the collective battle prowess of her hand-picked team, did Black Canary bring enough firepower to fight their way off Themyscira?!

Review

Birds of Prey #4 brings the action for an exciting issue that is sure to have readers cheering.  From start to its epic finish, fans will definitely be eagerly waiting to see what happens next.

The issue kicks off with all of Themyscira heading towards Black Canary and team. Their mission to save Sin from captivity on the magical island has gone by the wayside and now it’s time to fight their way out.

Every issue so far has had a fair balance of dialogue, exposition, and action. However, with the Amazons on the trail of the Birds of Prey, this issue leans heavily on the action–and it’s awesome. Wonder Woman has landed on the island and a good chunk of the issue is filled with her and Big Barda exchanging hit after hit. It’s truly an epic moment to witness the exchange of violence between the two warriors and adds to how strong the two are.

Writer Kelly Thompson has given readers such a great story and this issue is so far my favorite as there is so much going on in just 30-odd pages. Where different issues have given characters their moment to shine, it is now Big Barda’s turn and she definitely reminds readers that that warrior from Apokolips.

Thompson’s story has been great in writing, pacing, and dialogue and I have no qualms with this issue other than I wish it was longer. Artist Leonard Romero and colorist Jordie Bellaire make full use of the page filling it with so much action. I found myself pausing just to appreciate the panels as it is easy to fly through it with the stakes so high.

Final Thoughts

Fans of the series are definitely due for a treat with this issue. It perfectly balances pacing while still having its place in the overall story. From the writing to the art and colors, damn this issue is great.
