Review

Birds of Prey #6 reveals the aftermath now that the dust has settled from the team’s battle at Themyscira. Wrapping up the first arc of this great series, it’s clear there is still work to be done for Black Canary.

Since the beginning of the series, the Birds of Prey team have been swallowed by sharks, fought Wonder Woman, and met a giant supernatural creature bent on living in a human host. It’s been an exciting journey so far and this issue gets the team off of the island and back into Gotham.

Writer Kelly Thompson has put together a memorable story so far—especially with the creative team of Leonardo Romero (artist), Jordie Bellaire (colorist), and Clayton Cowles (letterer). The dialogue is sharp and the story is intriguing. Combined with stellar art, and overall this series has been a strong run.

Issue #6, while still entertaining, does have some pacing issues that detract from the overall experience. It’s not clear whether this is on the writer or even the editorial team wanting to have a complete arc for the inevitable trade release, however, this issue stuffs a lot into its 32 pages. This is not to say the story is bad, however, the ending of the Birds of Prey being on Themyscira is rushed and Wonder Woman has such a small presence despite the location.

Final Thoughts

The ending does have a hook for the next arc and this is a welcome note considering Thompson is doing such a great job with the title.
