Black Cat #15
Recap
Issue fifteen is the aftermath of Black Cat being in space for Queen in Black and barely making it out alive. This story is about Felicia going around the Marvel universe, and yet it always comes back to Peter Parker. This is the most important character she is tied to in her history, and she goes around the sun with him one more time.
Review
This issue is kind of a reset. It wants us, the readers, to see Felicia interact with every important part of the Marvel universe. But this reset brings us back to the beginning. Spider-Man acknowledges the work that Felicia has been doing around the city and the globe. You may ask what has Spider- Man been doing during these events, and they never explain, but that is for the best. This is not his story, and if we deviate from that, it will then become a Spider-Man story and not a Black Cat story.
This issue breezes by much like issue fourteen. We even got a cameo from Tombstone. We are seeing Felicia’s past sins come back, but she does not run from them. She invites the problems and tries to solve them. I do like that we get a little bit of heart here. I do not remember that in previous issues, but it makes sense here because Peter is the only one who can make Felicia feel great, but also he is the only one who can make her feel judged. So, this is less about hiding something big from him for nefarious reasons. This is about protecting her feelings from the one person that can hurt them the most.
I also think the comedy in this series is good. There are a couple of pages where Felicia is trying to do the right thing and pay someone, but they do not take cash. So, she steals what she wants, and as she leaves, she tells them, “You should take all currency!” It reminds me of when I was in a comic bookstore and tried to pay in cash, and they did not want to take my money because it was mostly ones. I always found that to be very strange business practices, but what do I know? I know stealing is wrong, but in this case, is it really?
The last thing I will touch on is the art. It is beautiful. I am not a big fan of Felicia’s face in this issue for some reason, but I just think they were drawing her from all different angles, and I just wasn’t feeling it, but that is extremely nitpicky. And the last thing from the art perspective is that the cover here is alright, and I understand why they chose it, but the two variant covers are fire and way better choices to me.
Final Thoughts
This story does not have many layers; to be honest, it can be seen as filler, but I think the end goal is to have Felicia touch every part of the Marvel universe before the big reveal of whatever the main point of this story is. Either way, I am invested, and I think these wonderful writers do a great job of showing us this woman from the different parts of her soul.
