Review
This sixth installment of Black Cloak sets the stage for a series of revelations for Phaedra. Phaedra feels an absolute range of emotions as the Queen stands before her. The Queen’s essence shines in a beautiful manner that hides away her vile secrets. The dialogue from Thompson carries through as it shows the betrayal and confusion of the fiery protagonist.
This creative team takes the reader through the Queen’s memory of what happened in her killing her son. Then another flashback reveals the Queen’s magician of how the son died. Artistically standout moments in the issue as McClaren uses different shades of color to illustrate these dark memories. Seeing other uses of color to convey a different person’s recollection of events is genuinely spectacular.
In a twist of uncertainty for the cast, there is an ambush on the Queen to stop her. This gives Phaedra and Pax to both shake things up. A moment to try to make things right by destroying the machine. It’s also important to note how fun the lettering of this issue is. Carey always adds such a splendid addition in the styles of lettering.
In the final pages of this issue, the team on this story ties together a riveting scene of Phaedra revealing her draconic wings to everyone around her. This captivating scene feels like a moment of freedom for Phaedra to be herself with no shame. A detective story that gives an audience a sweet and fulfilling conclusion to the first of many Black Cloak stories.
Final Thoughts
These final scenes really begs the question on what this now means for Phaedra’s future. Will a realization like this gain her more allies and enemies to come?
