Review

While the X-Men just finished with the Hellfire Gala, Black Widow and her allies have their own gala to attend: The Golden Gate Gala. It’s here that Black Widow’s team uncovers a secret operation none of them anticipated. Oh, and they get to wear gorgeous outfits, too.

I was really impressed with this issue in terms of capturing Natasha’s character. Last issue was very team-centric, with each character given a chance to shine. But this one has Natasha in the forefront, struggling with not being able to see her family while also dealing with the Winter Soldier’s feelings on the matter. Her inner struggles propel the story while Thompson smartly remembers to include fast-paced action which Casagrande beautifully captures with her art. The splash page of Natasha and Yelena battling a bunch of henchmen wearing animal masks was pure beauty and is exactly what I love about comic fight scenes.

The Gala was the perfect opportunity for Casagrande to show her high fashion chops, and she certainly does not disappoint. I’m obsessed with Natasha’s hair pulled back to look like a rose. Her whole look was elegant and beautiful, yet fits perfectly with the black widow spider theme. I would’ve loved to see more of Anya’s and Lucy’s gowns, but they had business to attend to.

The issue ends with a cliffhanger introducing a character I’m not familiar with so I’m guessing he’s brand new despite being a figure from Black Widow’s past. I’m hoping his personality and actions bring the flair of excitement not found in his somewhat unremarkable design. But we’ll find out all about him next issue!

Final Thoughts

Black Widow #12 is a thrilling and beautiful issue that explores Natasha's longing to see her family again all while dressing her up in a glamorous gown for the Golden Gate Gala. Black Widow has been a solid team book for a while, but the super-spy takes center stage as she uncovers a suspicious scheme that puts her right in the path of an enemy from her past. It's a set-up issue, but a very fun set-up issue and I can't wait to see what comes next.
