Blackwood: The Mourning After #3: Colorful Nights

Something that I have continuously loved about Blackwood: The Mourning After is the art. Veronica and Andy Fish have gained a lifetime fan. The eyes are immediately drawn to every page and don’t want to leave it until every detail is taken in. The majority of issue #3 takes place at night, yet there is so much color. When I think of the dark of night, I don’t immediately think of pink or purple. The Fish’s somehow executed colors in a way that makes me question what color the night really is. Blackwood: The Mourning After #3, or any issue, could be completely textless and still be incredible. Evan Dorkin’s writing is too good to be left out, though.

I have consistently been impressed with how Dorkin writes his characters. The young protagonists are especially well-written. Maybe it is because I am still relatively young, or that I instruct college students the same age as the Blackwood crew, but Dorkin’s writing never feels like a stretch or a caricature. This has a really great effect on the setting of the series. Having such likable and believable characters in a fantasy backdrop is quite the feat. The characters feel so real that there is no need for a suspension of disbelief. With one more issue to go, I will be sad to see Blackwood: The Mourning After end, issue #4 will absolutely be a highlight of my summer.
