Blackwood: The Mourning After #4
The Dark Wisdom conspiracy is revealed as the traitors make their move, and a sentient mass of interdimensional organ meat invades Dean Ogden's funeral. Making matters weirder, Chimp Ho Tep is on the loose and out for revenge, even if it means harpooning a student or two. The fur flies-as does the flesh-in the fiery finale of our four-issue frightfest. Phew!
Blackwood: The Mourning After finishes strong with a bang. The first three issues slowly built up to this. I was worried about this issue being too jam-packed since there are so many moving pieces from the first three. Evan Dorkin executes this finale perfectly, though. This might possibly be one of my favorite issues of the year. The library scene alone deserves recognition. I am not sure if it is possible for there to be a better creative team on this book. Veronica and Andy Fish compliment Dorkin’s work so perfectly, that I hope they all work together for many years. This might be the best-looking issue out of the series. There is a lot going on, but nothing gets lost in the panels.
From the closing panels, it seems like this will not be the last we see of Blackwood. I would be absolutely thrilled to see another mini-series get released. I applaud the creative team for breaking the series up into minis. The weight of this issue might have been overlooked if the series kept going to the next issue. Dorkin allows his arcs to feel isolated while still being part of a bigger picture, which is quite the feat for a book like this. Though Blackwood: The Mourning After is finished, I cannot wait to see what comes next. I am also looking forward to rereading the series from start to finish, starting as soon as this review is finished.
Blackwood: The Mourning After comes to a close with a climax that I will be thinking about for days. With incredible writing and stunning art, Evan Dorkin, Veronica Fish, and Andy Fish have put together a series worth rereading and worth waiting for what is next.
