Review
An opening to have Dracula pointing out why he knows Blade has failed is a different spin . For as long as Dracula has existed, an immortal being would have a lot of knowledge that others wouldn’t see. Witnessing Blade coming to him to learn how to use evil against evil is a very unique take on how to take down an enemy that is unlike many. Although with past situations, it would raise suspicion on Dracula’s intentions. Dracula is an odd choice of a mentor for a moment with Blade, yet given circumstances there isn’t anyone else to turn to as he has the answers. It’s compelling to see how he is able to reveal a new side of Vampirism to Blade and how this can unlock more inside him to help against The Adana.
One of the most compelling themes of this issue that Hill brings up is the complicated connection that Blade has with other vampires and especially Dracula himself. It feels incredibly suspenseful watching Blade interact with Dracula as the audience is curious for what he has to say to him, and if Dracula has anything sinister up his immortal sleeves. It’s fascinating as a reader to be able to experience in dialogue and flashbacks of Dracula’s perception of what evil really is, and how there can be misconceptions on that concept before someone can truly understand it. Petit is exceptional with the use of lettering and how to incorporate a different style of it for the wolf’s howl.
Ferguson and Diaz bring alive the dark world that exists beyond the shadows that a common marvel character wouldn’t have access to experiencing. These two are able to showcase the suspense that builds between the conversation of the unlikely new mentor and student.
Final Thoughts
In the final moments, the audience sees a surprising call from Bruce Banner hinting at the Hulk making a dynamic appearance in the next issue. Very curious to see how the Hulk will influence this story, and where that will lead Blade on his path.
