Review
Bleeding Hearts #2 flips the script from the first issue, shifting the focus away from the zombies and instead setting up the story of the human protagonists. As a result, this installment reads much more like a traditional zombie comic, closer in tone to The Walking Dead, as it provides a brief recap of how Cara and Rabbit came to be in this world. The issue ultimately circles back to the events that closed the first chapter, bringing the narrative full circle. While this issue feels structurally different from the debut, it still maintains the same sense of charm and heart in the face of death, with the lingering beauty of the world acting as a quiet counterpoint to the horror surrounding the characters.
The story behind Cara and Rabbit begins with Rabbit’s birth during the zombie apocalypse. The moment is presented not only as the arrival of a new character, but also as a powerful display of human resilience. Cara is forced to give birth in the back of a car while remaining completely silent in order to avoid attracting nearby zombies. This sequence alone is worth the price of the issue, with writer Deniz Camp and artist Stipan Morian crafting a tense and emotionally powerful moment within just a few pages.
It quickly becomes clear that, of the two human protagonists, Rabbit is the primary focal point of the narrative. The story largely centers on her journey growing up in this brutal world, though certain parts of her early life are glossed over, likely because she was just a baby and would have no memory of them. Rabbit is a character who has only ever known this horrific reality, which gives her a fundamentally different perspective from her mother. While Cara may never see the zombies as anything more than monsters, Rabbit may ultimately be the one capable of bridging that divide.
As the issue winds down, Rabbit’s journey through childhood catches up to the present day. Poke reappears to return her lost doll, setting the stage for what will likely become a mismatched partnership between the two as they navigate this strange new world where they might both be able to coexist. The possibilities this dynamic creates are nearly endless, giving the series room to explore a wide range of directions. It is exciting to see what this creative team has managed to do with such a long-established storytelling trope, transforming it into something that feels both unique and unexpectedly heartfelt.
Final Thoughts
Bleeding Hearts #2 continues to set up this world, albeit, from a different perspective, showcasing the possibilities of where this story can go.
