Review
Bleeding Hearts #5 feels like the culmination of the rising action in the series’ first chapter, setting the stage for the long teased big hunt that kicks off the Out?Break festival. Jumping ahead a day or so from the previous issue, this installment opens with Rabbit imprisoned alongside several other humans, all reserved for the ritual hunt that marks the start of the festivities. Meanwhile, Poke wanders through the festival’s attractions, reminding readers that he’s no longer fully committed to the zombie lifestyle. At the same time, he remains wary of anyone who might have seen him befriending Rabbit and her mother before Mush captured them. This tension eventually leads to Mush confronting him about the missing humans.
One of the issue’s more surprising moments is the reveal that Rabbit’s mother died after Mush abducted them. As a character who has been present since the first issue, and the only grounding link to the pre-outbreak world, her death initially feels abrupt. However, the latter half of the issue hints at another possibility. When Mush accuses Poke of hoarding Rabbit and her mother as food rather than sharing, Poke is relieved, thinking Mush has discovered his beating heart. But this confrontation raises a more intriguing question: What if Mush took Rabbit’s mother for himself and is now projecting his guilt or suspicions onto Poke? Such a twist would set up a powerful later reveal and raise the stakes as the outbreak festival begins in earnest.
Although much of the issue explores Poke’s internal conflict, it also showcases the sharp, humorous world?building that gives the series its distinct tone. At one point, Poke eavesdrops on a zombie conspiracy theorist proclaiming that zombies must be God’s purest creation, immortal beings who feast on humans purely for amusement. It’s a small moment, but one that perfectly encapsulates the darkly comedic charm that makes the story so delightful, even amid an apocalypse.
As the issue closes, the promise of a glorious hunt looms. The series continues to take unexpected paths, refusing to follow traditional narrative beats. While many plot threads remain, especially the mystery of Poke’s suddenly beating heart, each issue feels satisfying enough on its own that these questions enrich the story rather than overshadow it.
