Blossoms 666 #1 (of 5): Truth or Dare?

Blossoms 666, Archie Horror’s latest series, kicks off with a dark tale of intricately woven betrayal that delves into the evil lurking within Riverdale.

Cheryl and Jason Blossom are more than just the class tricksters that we are introduced to in the first pages of Blossoms 666 #1. Coming from a family of Satanists, these two are vying for the title of the Antichrist, and Riverdale has unknowingly become their proving grounds. It’s a truly interesting premise that writer Cullen Bunn delivers on exceptionally well. The pacing is fluid in both introducing these two characters and their ongoing competition as well as developing the overarching narrative. What works best, however, is the constant underlying presence of evil that is in every decision. The story uses this to explore the characters and their motives in a great way, from high school hijinks to more sinister rituals.

The art from Laura Braga works well for the story, particularly in helping to set it within the Archie comics aesthetic. However, Matt Herms distinctive lack of darker shadows sometimes lightened the overall mood more than I would have preferred. Aside from this, the visuals were really enjoyable, with notable praise for Jack Morelli and the exceptional lettering.

Overall, Blossoms 666 #1 is a twisted, but fun experience, that is great for both new and longtime fans. Themes of darkness spreading and the Antichrist rising mixed with Riverdale’s classic characters prove to be winning combination for the new limited series. Hopefully more great things are soon to come!
