Blue & Gold #5
Recap
Blue Beetle and Booster Gold have gone public like no other heroes have before. Livestreaming every adventure, every battle with every super-villain, and have even turned to crowdsourced funding to pay for their expenses. They're big on social media, but that's not necessarily a good thing.
Review
Man, this book has a really distracting element to it that I couldn’t take my eyes off, there’s so much cool Beetle and Booster MERCH in this issue that I really wish someone would make so I could own it! But, I digress. This issue is full of really nice surprises, there are guest stars, really awesome fights, and crazy people. Lots and lots of crazy people. I love this book because of the dynamic between the two heroes. We get lots of hero/sidekicks dynamics, we get our fair share of partner dynamics, but it’s rare that we get the best buddies dynamic in comics and it’s just a really refreshing change of pace. Add to that, the fact that author Dan Jurgens has given a really great modern-day take/updating to Booster and Beetle, and this issues a home run. One thing that I’ve loved throughout this series is the “social media interaction” that Jurgens peppers throughout the book. It’s laughable, but at the same time very true to life, which makes it actually really sad. Another good edge-of-your-seat story in this series.
You can always rely on artist Ryan Sook to be dependable on delivering each and every issue that he turns out, and this time is no different. There’s a lot going on in this issue and Sook nails it on every panel. From the cinematic action to the relaxed conversations, everything looks great. He creates some fantastic designs for some new characters and can I just mention that Sook has grown to a whole nother level with his crowd scenes? They are amazing!
Final Thoughts
A really exciting issue, filled with as much action as it is humor. Buy this comic! Worth both your time & money.
