Review
Book of Shadows keeps on growing, and issue two is no exception! This issue dives into the motives of our new baddie and shows the team just how hard it will be to take him down! We have some fun call backs to issues of Shadowman, that shows that Cullen is putting his all into this event!
Cullen’s writing is just as solid as ever. This series so far has changed up the formula on event titles, where we normally get a lot of background and exposition in issue one. This issue Cullen covers a lot of the history of how the big bad interacts with characters like the Eternal Warrior and Persephone.
Cullen also lets characters like Punk Mambo steal the spotlight (in a good way) with funny and quick one liners. Seeing characters like Punk interact with characters like Eternal Warrior is why I felt like a title like this was needed for the magical side of Valiant. It’s fun to see these characters get to know each other better.
Vicente’s art does a great job accompanying Cullen’s lines and characters. The way they draw the beasts in this issue is gruesome and really interesting to look at, but their understanding of all the characters in this team is astounding. Vicente does an amazing job showing these characters we know and love off. Letting them seem familiar, but showing off his own style. Vicente’s design skills are amazing and he is another match made in heaven for this title.
Final Thoughts
While this may be the last issue of Book of Shadows till the new year, I'm perfectly content with waiting. Not only is the work in this series worth the wait, but letting Cullen and the rest of the talent take their time on this series can only make it better!
