Review
Every now and then, a book drops into my lap that ends up being so diverse and wonderful you keep re-reading it over and over, but what happens when the book is silent.
Brokenland is that very book. Drew Morrison has created something exceptional not only for your mind but your soul. Brokenland, while silent, calls to your imagination and interpretation as the vehicle for which Meeso travels. Where the book lacks in words, it more than makes up for it with gorgeous coloring and design.
As soon as the book starts, you have carried off to the magical and mysterious Brokendland, a place inhabited by creatures of all sorts and mushrooms, lots of mushrooms. This may explain this book a little bit more (there’s a joke somewhere in there). All joking aside, Brokenland is a heartfelt tale of Meeso, who strives to be normal in a world with a vast array of problems he’s trying to navigate. As he seeks out a better, cleaner, and kinder world, you can’t help but feel for him and, at times, see a little bit of Meeso in yourself.
Aside from the masterful way this book is put together, something needs to be said about Drew Morrison and his uncanny ability to create a book with no dialogue and tell a beautiful story. Everything is in your head. Do the characters speak? If they do, what kind of dialogue do they use. Do they even have dialogue, or do they speak in a series of grunts and assorted noises? Here’s the key. It doesn’t matter! Meeso’s story is a self-driving adventure that has to be one of the most unique, beautiful, and heartfelt books I’ve seen in my 30 plus years of reading comics.
Brokenland is a beautifully silent masterpiece.
Final Thoughts
When I was given the opportunity to review Brokenland #4, I was taken back because I wasn’t expecting a silent book. Then as I read it and read it repeatedly, I found myself marveling at the talent of everyone involved in bringing this book to life.
