Calamity Kate #2: If you want something done right…

This was a great issue that did a great job building from and expanding on the plot and character dynamics of the first issue while also adding a very interesting rivalry.

As with the first issue, the family dynamic between Kate, her sister, and her niece is wonderfully written. They feel like a real family with the right mix of love and dysfunction but I feel what stole the spotlight this issue was the rivalry between Kate and Javelin. The animosity between these two is palpable at their chemistry makes for a very exciting contention.

One of the most interesting parts of this issue is how it presents the developing plot-thread of Kate as a role model to young Jade, not only through idealization and viewing Kate as the “cool adult” at home but also with an adorable yet concerning scene of Jade playing monster hunters with a friend. This is sure to become a very interesting plotline.

The art was great and complemented the story well; from the soft, wholesome feel of the scene with Jade and her friend to bloody scenes of carnage and interesting creature designs. There were a few pages without dialogue where the art really excelled at creating atmosphere and building suspense.

This is a great series full of great character dynamics and a lot of action and heart; fun, touching, and full of bloody action.
