Captain Marvel #2: That’s Captain To You

Coming off an explosive first issue, Captain Marvel #2 delves into Carol’s uniquely inspiring leadership abilities as she is thrust into battle alongside the women who have been trapped by Nuclear Man’s dome.

The story from Kelly Thomspon succeeds on many different levels, but arguably the most important is the willingness to confront the barriers placed in front of her as both a woman and a powerful leadership figure. These barriers have been personified by Mahkizmo and his rather implicit dome that has only allowed women to become trapped. This creates a stunning visualization that encompasses both the story’s societal relevance and the potential for Captain Marvel as a character.

As a continuation to the powerful first issue, we now find Captain Marvel in a dire battle against Mahkizmo, but with her presence and capability, the group of women fighters are quickly able to turn the tide of battle. The rapid pace gives the creative team an opportunity to show many facets of Carol as a character while introducing the now war-weary characters like Hazmat. Although we do not reach the conclusion of their fight against Mahkizmo, the weighty developments and cliffhanger ending show that this will only continue to be a thrilling arc.

The artistic direction from Carmen Carnero, Tamra Bonvillain and VC’s Clayton Cowles helps to elevate the story to something truly special. The characters are consistently solid, but there are also a lot of spectacular moments and emotional dialogue to keep the issue interesting on every page.

The fight is far from over for Captain Marvel, but the first arc from the new creative team is quickly proving to be a story that fans won’t want to miss!
