Review
The showdown that fans talk so often about occurs once more in Captain Marvel #4, but after the trauma their last fight caused, can Carol overcome an even stronger Rogue?
The answer is…not provided in this issue unfortunately. Their fight this time around is much more complex considering that Rogue is actually under the control of Nuclear Man at the moment. Although her internal resistance offers brief moments of reprieve for Carol, their one-on-one fight is still really distressing. This speaks to the talent of writer Kelly Thompson however, who uses Carol’s past to build tension between a longstanding conflict and reflect it in each character’s actions magnificently well. This has helped to create an interesting situation where Carol is truly struggling with her fears and potential inadequacies.
Although Rogue and Captain Marvel eventually come up with a plan to free themselves of Nuclear Man’s schemes, we are still left with the two heroes merged and falling right into a trap of the villain’s own making. This is a classic comic ending that works well enough, but I couldn’t help but want more insight into their current dilemma. Looks like we will have to wait one more issue to find out the results!
The artistic direction in Captain Marvel #4 offers crucial storytelling elements especially during the fight between Captain Marvel and Rogue. With Rogue’s powers essentially stronger than before, she can now drain individuals who are simply nearby her. The visuals we see of Rogue draining Captain Marvel help to make this story succeed on a fundamental level. While it’s definitely terrifying, it more importantly helps to increase the stakes and build even more tension.
The entire issue is actually quite epic, but it’s real strength comes from the emotional depth of Carol’s past. It has plenty of action and kicking @$%, but the relationship between Captain Marvel and Rogue is what will really keep the pages turning. Hopefully next issue can keep the momentum up…
Final Thoughts
Captain Marvel #4 explores Carol's relationship with Rogue in a truly remarkable way, helping to tell a story that is both action-packed and incredibly heartfelt. Fans, you won't want to miss this one.
