Review
Alyssa Wong flips the script to deliver an immensely powerful Billy Kaplan that can take on a cosmic being who is trying to suck the life out of his husband. No sir, not here. Not allowed. Billy’s powers make him a force to be reckoned with when his husband is in danger. It is also nice to see how strong and capable Billy is. Our space wizard has come far. We will gladly take any comic that shows this off.
Although the art is a bit rough in its facial expression and character design, particularly with Wiccan and Hulkling, the image of Billy holding his husband is one no one expected, but is exactly what was needed.
The Omen’s design is as galactic, complex, and all-powerful as we would expect from an entity with such a huge title. It is human and not, shaded in color and galaxy alike, but also with a distinct shape, and emotional resonance. It makes for an intimidating antagonist, especially when they can absorb the spark of power within our heroes. It feels otherworldly and unhuman, which is the point. The colors chosen also excellently separate this entity from the rest of the characters.
Yuna proves herself again to be a great addition to the Captain Marvel squad, and the superhero world, showing off her strength and compassion. She and Leonore have a great moment, as they are trapped together in the negative zone. Their scenes help illustrate the scale and power of The Omen while keeping the story centered and character-driven. The Omen must be stopped before more people are turned into her zombie army and more worlds are consumed. The build-up to the potential romance between Yuna and Leonore is great, and it would be amazing to see the relationship blossom outside of near-death experiences.
The comic continues its pacing decently balancing out action and quieter moments of character development and interaction. The action scenes are well-illustrated but struggle sometimes with unusual visual angles, leading to an occasional awkward pose.
With a cliffhanger ending, so many more questions remain. How will the team stop The Omen? Is this the end of Genis-Vell? Will Yuna and Leonore ever get back to Earth?
The challenge facing Alyssa Wong is balancing all these character arcs, Rick and Genis, Carol, Phyla, and Lauri-El, Billy and Teddy, and Leonore and Yuna. Time will tell how all of these separate stories come back together, and how they will resolve. But the comic continues to be a good adventure for those craving that Captain Marvel fare, and love space and other wordily adventures.
Final Thoughts
Solid middle of a run issue that continues the story and packs enough to keep you coming back for more.
