Recap

Selina’s international tour of death and rebirth continues. Her latest crime? Going deep beneath the sea to rescue a film director turned brainwashed political prisoner from a bunch of undersea ne’er-do-wells. The only problem is the director doesn’t want to leave his new home, and he’s harboring a secret that’ll make him lethal to Selina if anyone finds out he’s been taken…including the director himself. To make it through the mission with any of her nine lives intact, Catwoman will have to trick her quarry into thinking nothing out of the ordinary is happening. But will her acting skills stand up to the director’s standards?!

Review

There’s a lot that takes place in the 63rd issue of Catwoman. Continuing the Nine Lives arc, it addresses the series biggest flaw at the moment; what’s going on? After the Gotham War, Selina Kyle makes another getaway from the doomed city in which she is now tossed into a weird storyline where she revisits a series of different aspects of the DC Universe. In fact, it feels like the Outsiders series centered around a single character. While each issue feels enjoyable on their own, which could even make up an anthology of different Catwoman stories by Tini Howard, issue 63 seems to address the problem and begins to ramp up the story’s pace.

The issue begins with Selina standing with a fair amount of lives. She is tasked with finding an indie film director, Justice Jordan (no relation to Hal Jordan), whose last reported whereabouts is the place where the Tritonians make their home. Selina must dive in deep waters and find her way around killers to save the cinephile.

Without giving too much away, the story is very well action packed and entertaining with a surprise twist at the end that brings back foes from the beginning of the Nine Lives arc.

There are, however, some things that call into question if the writer, Tini Howard, knows what she’s doing, and like I stated previously, makes it apparent. This is evident in Selina Kyle’s questionable manner towards things, where she’s not really sure of a lot. She doesn’t know how to answer Moshi’s question at the beginning of the issue. A return to Gotham City is then hinted at when she comes face to face with the Cat-God. With uncertainty running rampant in the air, Selina Kyle ultimately dying at the end of the arc could very well be a possibility that will turn Batman upside down.

What’s exciting about the arc, going forward, is the Cat-God. The idea behind it is something that feels like it should’ve been implemented with the character long ago.

Final Thoughts

While an action packed issue, number 63 addresses and hints at small flaws in Catwoman's story that could very well take the series downhill.
