Recap

Guest-Starring CYCLOPS and the MARAUDERS! Avast, ye! CHAMPIONS ON THE HIGH SEAS! NOVA, IRONHEART, MILES and MS. MARVEL have narrowly escaped C.R.A.D.L.E. for now with the help of their old teammate, but it’s out of the frying pan and into the...ocean.

Review

We jump right into the action where the Champions find Cyclops coming to their aid. Within moments we see a wonderful appearance of Pixie using her magic to teleport the team to a safer location away. Cyclops reveals to the team how C.R.A.D.L.E. has been relentlessly on their tail. To their surprise, Viv has been somehow alerting them as to where her team is. Then Cyclops has to reveal another hard truth that he can’t take all of them to Krakoa. I appreciate the reaction Ewing sets up for the members and how they react in their own way. I enjoy these exchanges from Cyclops as while he is in the complicated bind of Krakoan rules, he is trying his absolute hardest to save his old friends.

It’s a very fun way to incorporate the X-men by Cyclops taking the Champions to the Marauder. Here we get to see great exchanges from the Marauders and the teen heroes. It’s a very cute nod to have Scott temporarily wear his old Champions outfit, which wonderfully still fits. We get to see the two teams working together out in the sea to help a group of humans. Ewing uses this as a great moment for the younger heroes to learn some valuable knowledge from the experience the Marauders have from each mission they go on.

I really enjoy how Bob Quinn draws facial expression on the characters throughout this issue. Quinn is able to easily capture the emotions of a character whether they are shaken with sadness or fueled with anger. I enjoy the coloring that Federico Blee does for the characters. I appreciate the colors for the water as it really shows the true blue of the ocean.

Final Thoughts

I really enjoy how Ewing incorporates the X-Men into helping these on-the-run teen heroes. It’s really important to show that Scott still remembers how much he cares about his old friends and is willing to do anything he can to protect them from harm. In these memorable interactions, we get to see Kamala, Riri, Miles, and Sam learning that it is absolutely okay to make mistakes. We even get a sweet scene of Viv learning the same from a different perspective. This creative team does a great job in keeping you engaged as these fearless heroes find themselves on the run. Ewing does an exceptional job building these teen heroes, and I can’t wait to see them continue to live up to their potential.
