Champions #19 Next Chapter (Northern Lights Part 1)

With a new team line-up, the next era of Champions starts here!

CHAMPIONS #19
Writer: Jim Zub
Artist: Sean Izaakse
Colorist: Marcio Menyz
Letterer: VC’s Clayton Cowles
Publisher: Marvel Comics

What You Need to Know: After the young Cyclops had no choice but to quit the team and return to the X-Men. Ironheart and the new Wasp have joined the team. With renewed spirits and hopeful in making a difference. The Champions begin the next chapter of their team’s mission for change.

What You’ll Find Out: Ironheart, Hulk, and the Wasp have built the Champions a new mobile bunker in which to base out of. The team test drives their new base by heading to the Arctic. A recording beacon has gone off online and requires investigation. When the team arrives, they’re encountered by drones that attack immediately. Nova attempts to end the conflict but ends up getting severely hurt.

What Just Happened? Jim Zub starts off with what makes a teen book good, relationships. Getting to know our new team and the dynamics. Just the scene of Nova choosing top bunk gives the book a much needed down to earth feel. Zub ups the stakes though with Nova’s overconfidence getting him hurt. Ironheart is particularly interesting as she replaces Cyclops as the socially unaware component to the team.

Rating: 8/10

Final Thoughts: Jim Zub and Mark Waid just finished on Avengers No Surrender together. Considering the outstanding teamwork they did on that book. Zub is probably the best choice to take over where Waid left off. Zub begins in fine style, remembering that this is a teen book and doesn’t miss the subtleties that give a teen superhero book heart. I’m strapped in and ready to see what’s in store.
