Review
It’s Ocean’s 11 meets Thelma and Louise as DC launches this brand new mini featuring two of its most popular and iconic villains in this “buddyl heist mini series with two of the most prolific Wonder Woman creators, Eisner award winners, Greg Rucka and Nicola Scott! Do these two women have what it takes to rob Earth’s most powerful protectors, and get away with it? Can they pull this off with not trying to kill each other? We’ll just have to see!
So detailed. Evoking George Perez and John Cassaday.
Greg Rucka’s back on another Wonder Woman project, and who better to helm it than one of the best scribes who ever to ever write a Wonder Woman comic than he? Greg, who is one of the rare creators who has had critical and commercial successes with several characters, but he always seems to jump at any Wonder Woman he’s offered. Rucka’s Diana has become the gold standard when it comes to the Wonder fam. Greg’s take on Cheetah is akin to a modern Greek tragedy, filled with pathos, going through the emotional spectrum. Minerva’s transformation into the were-beast that is a heartbreaking status quo, that you can’t help but to feel compassion for her. Rucka’s Cheetah is a masterclass on world building, and character development.
Pain. Anger. You can feel the emotion emoting from the pages.
Rucka and Scott add Cheshire to the show. It’s interesting to see Cheshire, regardless of where she’s showing up. Sometimes we get those mustache twirling villains, other times we’ll see a rather compelling light, as seen here, Rucka’s portrayal is that of a very matured, fully realized character, who just so happens to be one of the most popular assassins in the DC Universe. Getting her start as a Titans foe, she’s branched out over the years, eventually becoming a greater DC Universe villain, as well as a Secret Six member. Rucka’s voice for Jade is a treat. Giving her so much personality, that the reader is drawn to her scenes, making you want to skip to the next page.
Nicola Scott’s art here is absolutely stunning. Her character work is lush, and beautiful. I first noticed Nicola’s art in the Wonder Woman Blackest Night tie-ins, and her evolution as an artist has been meteoric. Every page is packed with something. Her Cheetah is powerful, vicious, tragic, and beautiful all at the same time. Meanwhile her Cheshire is funny, gorgeous, and devastatingly lethal. The level of detail rendered here is so high quality, and beautifully executed. Scott’s one of those artists who are from the school of George Perez. High quality, detailed beyond belief, regardless of how many characters are showing up in panels. It’s just truly amazing work here. I can’t wait to see what comes next.
Final Thoughts
Greg Rucka and Nicola Scott started this mini with guns blazing. Rucka’s intimate relationship with these characters is evident with each line of dialogue, while Scott’s art is vibrant, and warm. These two are some of the best regarded players in the business, and they showed they aren’t here to play.
