Review
Cloak or Dagger has finally appeared in this AGE OF REVELATION! Set X years in the future, in this dark timeline we see the two star crossed lovers are trapped in a world not of their own making! Written by Justina Ireland, with art by Lorenzo Tammetta! The two are finally married, but there’s a price to pay for their union! Trapped on the outskirts of the Revelation Zone, Tandy and Tyrone are working with resistance fighters, who are working tirelessly to save those who haven’t been changed by the X-virus before it’s too late! So let’s get on with the show!
The story is set “X years later” in the Age of Revelation timeline, Tandy and Tyrone are now married—but in this future they face a terrifying consequence due to their exposure to the X-virus: they can no longer exist on the same plane at the same time. Their affliction is tied into the larger plot of the X-Virus and the new mutant utopia of the “Revelation Territories”. They must navigate both intimate relationship challenges and the epic stakes of this dystopian future. Tandy and Tyrone are forced to live in the Dark Dimension, the place where Tyrone, and a host of other Marvel characters who all have similar abilities, while the other is on the earthly plane. There’s also another twist: the two have a daughter who’s trapped in the Dark Dimension, along with whichever parent is there at the time.
It’s a tried and true predicament that we’ve seen with several characters, dating all the way back to Captain Marvel and Rick Jones, but it’s something that’s very new to these two. The two are linked together, and they have been since their first appearance, where they were kidnapped by Silvermane’s Maggia henchmen, who used them and a bunch of other runaways with a new synthetic heroin that killed the other kids, but it changed Tandy and Ty into something more. Over the last 43 years these two kids have been mutates, mutants, and back and forth. Their current status is unclear at this time, but all we know is their current status is due to their exposure to the X-virus.
Lorenzo Tammetta is on art duties here, and he’s really knocked it out of the park. I’ve become a fan of his after his work he did on GODS, but it was him working on the last several Scarlet Witch books, with writer Steve Orlando, that made me really take notice. His line work is great, and all of the characters are immediately recognizable. The detail that he puts into both Tandy and Tyrone, and their power signatures look great here. Also seeing the Fenris Twins here was an added bonus. They’re so laissez-faire about being evil Nazis, who have an extremely troubling incestuous relationship, that you want to see more of it despite yourself. As for the art, bottom line: Tammetta seems to be coming into his own here.
Final Thoughts
The issue sets up an interesting hook— the longtime duo Tandy and Tyrone are married, but as a result of their powers/relationship only one can exist on the earth, while the other is trapped in the Dark Dimension-with their daughter.
This twist puts the two in a situation that the two aren’t used to being in, but being tragically entwined isn’t new. Justina’s an unknown to me, but she’s really set up an interesting status for our heroes. Mix in Lorenzo Tammetta’s slick work, you’ve got a stone cold winner!
